European Court of Auditors Acknowledges Work of EUBAM

On 15 January the European Court of Auditors published the Special Report “The effectiveness of EU support in the area of freedom, security and justice for Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine”, which presents the results of performance audit of EU projects in the area of border management, migration and asylum, fight against organised crime and judicial and good governance. Auditors reviewed 40 EU projects, total value of EUR 100 million. Although many of these projects received significant criticism, EUBAM was recognised as one of the most effective EU project.
The work of EUBAM team was highly appreciated by the European Union auditors.
“The financially most significant project in the area of freedom, security and justice, the European Union Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and contributed greatly to building capacity in the Moldovan and Ukrainian border guard and custom services. For example, EUBAM aided the effective implementation and monitoring of a new customs regime between Moldova and Ukraine, thus helping to combat smuggling and illegal cross-border activity,” stated the report.
Auditors have identified border management as the most successful area out of all EU activities in Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine.
